Chevening Alumni Malaysia (CAM) Committee members – Shamila Neelakandan, Samsurin Welch, Wan Djawad and Nithi Nesadurai – represented CAM at the meeting to discuss the creation of an Asian Chevening Alumni Network (ACAN). Hosted by the Chevening Alumni Korea in Seoul, Korea, it was held on September 11-12.

Activities commenced on Friday, September 11 at 6.30pm at British High Commission premises with a networking evening. More than 50 participants from China, India, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Korea had gathered for this significant event. National boundaries eased away as alumni engaged with each other as if they had been friends for years, while in reality, were meeting for the first time.

Discussions on the creation of an Asian Chevening network commenced on September 12 at the stylish Dongdaemun Design Plaza. Statements by leaders or representatives of the alumni groupings of each country were followed by country presentations. While Nithi made the introductory remarks, Samsurin presented on CAM’s activities over the past eight years.

A panel discussion followed on the theme of creating ACAN. Shamila represented CAM on the panel and highlighted the role it had played in creating the ASEAN Network of Chevening Alumni six months earlier. Following inputs from the audience, the discussion concluded with participants supporting the creation of ACAN. Representatives from China then pledged to host the meeting of the network in 2016.
